A community partnership has been established to fund a three-year, $500,000 transformational grant called Accelerating Change Together (ACT). The grant aims to invest in the Hampton Roads nonprofit community, build upon education, and develop a skilled workforce that benefits the nation.

$500,000 ACT Grant Awarded to Fund NTI Program

The Newport News Education Foundation has been awarded the $500,000 Accelerating Change Together (ACT) Grant to support the Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) New Teacher Institute (NTI) program. The three-year, step-down grant will provide the funding necessary for NTI to answer the regional call to build a workforce pipeline to expand its new first—and second-year teacher programs.

Just as our companies are working collaboratively to implement this program, we hope the grant will inspire like-minded nonprofits to work together to strengthen the communities where we all live and work. Deadline to submit ACT Grant applications closes on July 31, 2024.

  • Funds are intended to support a new project
  • Clearly define objectives
  • Demonstrate community need
  • Project plan and 3-year budget
  • Identify the target population
  • Locality breakdown and demographic analysis
  • Impact of failing to implement the program
  • Metrics to track, evaluate, and judge effectiveness
  • Anticipated outcomes of the program
  • Sustainability plan on how the project will survive

The following types of organizations will not be able to apply for a grant under this program:

  • Churches and organizations with a primarily religious purpose; however, organizations with a religious background, whose program benefits the greater good of the community, may apply for consideration, specifically for a non-sectarian program that has neither religious components nor eligibility requirements.
  • Political or propaganda organizations
  • Civic clubs & community/neighborhood organizations
  • Organizations that solely support an individual
  • Organizations will not be eligible if it is the subject of ethical uncertainty or if it places demographic restrictions on the type of persons it serves.
  • Organizations whose programs discriminate based on race, color, age, sex, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law shall be ineligible.
